For Rodney Strasser, the story did not end when his professional football career came to an end.
His journey from the football pitches of Freetown to AC Milan remains one of Sierra Leone’s most remarkable football stories. But today, another chapter of that journey is taking shape one defined less by trophies and more by service, mentorship and giving back.
That is what makes his latest recognition particularly significant.
At the 10th Annual Achievement Awards Ceremony held on September 5, 2026, AWOL America honored the former AC Milan midfielder with its Legendary Sportsman Award.
While Strasser’s achievements in European football provide an obvious reason for celebration, his post-playing career offers another perspective on why his contribution deserves recognition.
Strasser has increasingly used his experience and influence to create opportunities for young Sierra Leoneans, particularly aspiring footballers. Through the Rodney Strasser Foundation, he has remained involved in developing young talent and mentoring the next generation.
His contribution, however, has not been limited to football.
One of the clearest examples came when he supported the medical facility where he was born by donating a generator at a time when electricity shortages were creating serious challenges for healthcare delivery, including maternity services.
It is a reminder that Strasser’s connection with Sierra Leone has extended beyond wearing the national colours.
He has also taken on a leadership role in the country’s football administration as President of the Sierra Leone Professional Footballers Union, giving him another platform to advocate for the interests and development of professional players.
His commitment to humanitarian causes also predates his retirement. During his time in Europe, Strasser was among footballers who used their visibility to raise their voices against racism and support humanitarian efforts, including initiatives connected to the Ebola crisis in West Africa.
That evolution from player to mentor, administrator and humanitarian provides a different way of understanding Strasser’s legacy.
His name is still associated with one of the biggest clubs in world football, AC Milan, where he experienced European football at the highest level. But his impact today is increasingly being measured by what he is doing away from the pitch.
For a country that often celebrates its footballers primarily for what they achieve abroad, Strasser’s story raises a more important question: What happens when the football career is over?
In Strasser’s case, the answer has been to remain connected to home and use the experience gained abroad to contribute to the next generation.
The AWOL America Legendary Sportsman Award therefore represents more than a celebration of a former professional footballer.
It is recognition of a Sierra Leonean whose football journey has evolved into a broader commitment to people, sport and community.
From the streets of Freetown to the San Siro, Strasser carried Sierra Leone’s name onto the international stage.
Now, away from the spotlight of European football, he is attempting to build a legacy of another kind one measured not only by where he played, but by what he gives back.
