Sierra Leone Aquatics President Mohamed Abdul Turay has been elected Vice President of the Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Bureau following the organisation’s Congress held in Dakar, Senegal, on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Turay secured the second-highest number of votes among the successful vice-presidential candidates, behind Senegal’s Magatte Dieye, as representatives of Zone 2 member federations gathered to elect a new regional leadership.
The newly elected Bureau is headed by Mamouru Bouare of Mali as President, with Farida Idriss of Ghana serving as General Secretary and Stephane Jacques of Gabon as Treasurer.
The Vice Presidents elected are Dr Bambi Sakho of Guinea, Hon. GBE Orphe of the Central African Republic, Magatte Dieye of Senegal and Mohamed Abdul Turay of Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone Aquatics was represented at the Congress by Ishmael Bayoh, Media Attaché at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Dakar. Bayoh was granted delegate status by the Sierra Leone Aquatics Executive Committee to represent the federation during the Congress and election process.
Turay’s election marks his return to a regional aquatics leadership position 11 years after he was first elected to a similar role in Nigeria in 2015.
His latest appointment gives Sierra Leone representation within the leadership structure of Africa Aquatics Zone 2 and an opportunity to contribute to regional efforts aimed at developing swimming and other aquatic sports.
Speaking following his election, Turay thanked member federations and delegates for the confidence placed in him, describing his election as both an honour and a responsibility.
He pledged to work alongside other members of the newly elected Bureau to promote unity and advance the development of aquatic sports across the Zone.
Turay also thanked the Sierra Leone Embassy in Dakar and Bayoh for supporting and representing Sierra Leone Aquatics during the Congress.
Sierra Leone Aquatics congratulated the newly elected Bureau and expressed its commitment to working with the regional leadership to strengthen the development of aquatics across Zone 2.
