The Parliamentary Committee on Sports on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, summoned officials from the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA) to provide a status update on the ongoing rehabilitation of the National Stadium.

During the meeting at Tower Hill in Freetown, Committee Chairperson Hon. Racheal Pessima congratulated NSA Executive Director Mohamed Alphaka Conteh on his appointment and reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting the completion of the project.

NSA Deputy Executive Director Dr. Abdulai Rahman Swaray informed the Committee that the rehabilitation project, which commenced in February 2022, has exceeded its timeline due to gaps in the project agreement. He noted that the delay prevented Sierra Leone from hosting matches in the ongoing FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Executive Director Mohamed Alphaka Conteh emphasized that completing the project requires both political will and practical action. He also pledged to promote professionalism, unity, and stronger collaboration within the sports sector.

The Committee was further briefed on recent engagements involving the Chinese Ambassador and other key stakeholders aimed at accelerating the completion of the National Stadium rehabilitation project.
