Former Sierra Leone international Rodney Strasser has used his own experience as a professional footballer to highlight the importance of financial education and proper guidance for athletes during and after their playing careers.
Speaking during the “After the Pitch: Athlete Transition and Life Beyond the Game” discussion, Strasser candidly revealed that he bought four cars early in his football career, without having anyone to properly guide him on how to manage his money.
His experience formed part of a wider conversation about the challenges athletes face when they move from professional sport into life after football.
Strasser’s story highlighted the importance of athletes receiving financial advice early in their careers, particularly when they begin earning significant incomes.
The discussion also emphasized the need for athletes to plan beyond football by investing wisely, pursuing education, building businesses and surrounding themselves with trusted mentors.
Strasser’s experience serves as a reminder that professional success on the pitch does not automatically translate into financial security after retirement.
