Financial concerns surrounding the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) have resurfaced following the reported suspension of its Finance Manager, Ibrahim Bah, with an SLFA account reportedly coming under scrutiny over approximately Le1.307 billion in withdrawals and expenditure linked to preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The account, held at the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank (SLCB), reportedly opened with a balance of approximately Le11.93 million before receiving significant sponsorship inflows, including Le1 billion from SLCB as AFCON sponsorship and Le700 million from Africell.

According to information reviewed, substantial amounts were subsequently withdrawn or spent in cash, raising questions about compliance with the SLFA’s financial and cash-handling procedures.

On November 10, 2021, three counter-cheque cash withdrawals reportedly totaling Le429 million were made by the SLFA Finance Director. The transactions have come under scrutiny over allegations that they were inconsistent with the association’s financial policy.

Earlier, on November 5, 2021, approximately Le575 million was reportedly spent on hotel reservations and other preparatory expenses associated with the national team’s AFCON preparations.

The financial transactions have gained renewed attention following the reported suspension of Finance Manager Ibrahim Bah, who is said to have been unable to provide adequate retirement documentation and supporting records explaining how the funds were utilized.

The issues raise broader questions about financial controls, accountability and documentation within the country’s football governing body, particularly concerning funds received for major national-team competitions.

However, Ibrahim Bah could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.

The SLFA has yet to publicly provide a detailed explanation addressing the reported transactions, the circumstances surrounding the cash withdrawals, or the documentation supporting the expenditure.

This story will be updated if the SLFA or Ibrahim Bah provides further clarification.
